HAMPTON, Va.—With one round of EYBL games in the books, Nike teams are taking stock of their position, performances and…in some cases…rosters before taking the floor for round two in early July.  All 32 teams have five contests to dissect for use in making preparations for five more games in either Chicago or Nashville.  The ultimate goal, of course, is securing one of 24 spots on the big stage in North Augusta (S.C.) for Nike Nationals and a chance at the brass ring of club basketball.

Two teams came out of their first five games with unblemished records.  Cy-Fair and DFW T-Jack did the Lone Star State proud emerging undefeated and leading their respective divisions into play in Chicago.  While they wouldn’t meet in EYBL play until Augusta, Cy-Fair did claim bragging rights in a meeting three weeks ago by way of a 57 – 43 win in the Southwest Spring Classic.

Seven more teams take a single loss resume’ into round two.  All Iowa Attack, Boo Williams, Central Florida Elite, Essence, Fairfax Stars, North Tartan and Tennessee Flight each went 4 and 1 over the weekend in Hampton.  Three of them (CFE, Fairfax and Flight) suffered their lone setback against undefeated DFW T-Jack.  All Iowa lost to Essence while Essence took it on the chin from Team Takeover in their final game of the weekend.  Boo Williams dropped a nine point game to the Gym Rats and North Tartan came up short just once falling to Tree of Hope in their Friday opening game.

Seven teams sit just above .500 with 3 and 2 records.  Four of those teams (All Ohio, Cal Storm-Taurasi, Carolina Flames, Team Elite Pointer) follow DFW into the Elena Delle Donne Division promising some intense action before all is said and done.  Two more (Miami Suns-Fowles and Tree of Hope) will line up in the Tina Charles Division with undefeated Cy-Fair and one loss All Iowa.  Spiece Gym Rats will take the other 3 and 2 mark into play in the Angel McCoughtry Division with single loss teams Boo Williams, Essence and North Tartan.

Defending EYBL champs Cal Stars went 2 – 3 along with six other teams.  Five more stand at 1 and 4 while the Cal Sparks and newcomers Fast Girls Elite and Colorado Premier face an uphill battle failing to notch a single win in round one play.

STATS AND STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD

Undefeated Cy-Fair paced the per game scoring posting a 71.2 point per game average.  The Gym Rats followed at 65.4 with the Tennessee Flight just behind them at 63.6 and Fairfax Stars at 63.0.  Three more averaged more than 60 a game led by All Iowa with 61.8 followed by the West Coast Premier at 61.0 and Cal Stars at 60.4.

On the other end of the spectrum Fast Girls Elite struggled to a 33.4 per game average in their first five EYBL games.  Fellow rookie league member Colorado Premier fared just slightly better at 38.0.  Three other teams failed to average 50 points a game.  The New England Crusaders found the going tough at 43.6 per game while the Michigan Crossover (47.4) and Team Elite Pointer (48.2) fell short of averaging the half century mark in their five contests.

On the boards just one team topped the 40 rebound per game barrier.  Despite going 3 and 2, Tree of Hope came home with a 40.9 average for the weekend.  Tennessee Flight was next grabbing 39.0 a game followed by three more teams (Boo Williams, Cal Stars and Kentucky Premier) at 38.8.  The Colorado Premier struggled on the glass with a 27.4 average joined by All-Ohio at 29.8 as the only two teams below 30 rebounds a game.

While sixth in scoring, the West Coast Premier led the way in field goal shooting with an average of 47.6 percent per game.  The Missouri Phenom showed some efficiency in shooting the ball with a 45.0 percent mark while undefeated Cy-Fair was third with their 44.6 percentage.  Just four more teams shot over 40 percent as a team.  DFW T-Jack (41.9), Fairfax Stars (41.1), Gym Rats (40.4) and Central Florida (40.3) round out the top seven team shooting averages.

Of course putting points on the scoreboard is meaningless if you can’t shut down the opposition on the other end.  Six teams were able to hold their five opponents to below a 50 point a game average.  Boo Williams and Essence both limited their adversaries to a 46 point per game scoring average.  The Miami Sun controlled scoring at a 47 per game rate while Tree of Hope dug in at 47.8, Team Elite Pointer at 48.2 and West Coast Premier locked down at 48.6 a game.

While the “fifties” were where most defensive scoring averages came in, six more teams painfully gave up over 60 points a game for their weekend average.  The Colorado Premier surrendered 67 points per game followed by the Cal Sparks who permitted a 62.8 average both on challenging 0 and 5 weekends.  The New Jersey Sparks and Cal Swish both gave up 60.8 per game while Crossover (60.6) and Exodus NYC (60.0) joined the over 60 crowd on the defensive end.

Taking care of the ball has its value regardless of scoring or rebounding.  No sense contributing to the cause for the folks on the other bench.  West Coast Premier had Coach Brian Crichlow smiling turning the ball over just 11.2 times a game.  The Gym Rats followed at 11.4 and All-Iowa at 11.8.  There were three more under the superstitious number of 13.  Fairfax (12.0), Cy-Fair (12.6) and the New Jersey Sparks (12.8) all took care of the ball over the course of round one.

While nobody averaged 20 turnovers a game, five teams with averages over 19 had to have had more than their share of miscues in just five contests.  Tree of Hope led the generosity giving it away 19.8 times a game followed by Fast Girls Elite and Cal Sparks both at 19.6.  Kentucky Premier (19.2) and Missouri Phenom (19.0) rounded out those averaging in excess of 19 turnovers per game.
